2013 Plates Compulsory

August 1, 2012

Vehicle data company, CAP have said that motorists will be unable to opt for 62 licence plates over 13 when buying a new car in March next year.

In recent months the motor industry has been rife with speculation regarding 2013's number plates. In fact it had been suggested that buyers would be able to choose 62 plates instead.

In spite of this CAP have confirmed that the only way car insurance holders can avoid buying a car with 13 is to choose a private plate instead, however, these tend to start from around £250.

Commenting on this, Martin Ward from CAP said:

"The rumour that drivers will be allowed to opt out of 'unlucky 13' was based more on hope than fact, as our contacts at the DVLA have confirmed."

In spite of this he went on to add that he was unsure as to whether second-hand vehicles with the number 13 would depreciate in value:

"It is not often we say this at CAP but we have no idea whether the used values of 13-plate cars will be affected or not, although it does seem unlikely."
