Figures released in a report by Scotland's Chief Statistician revealed that the introduction of safety cameras has dramatically reduced the number of serious injuries and fatalities on Scottish roads.
The figures showed that the number of people killed or seriously injured fell by 68% when comparing the average over the last 3 years - 2009 to 2011.
According to the report mobile speed camera sites have seen a reduction in speeding vehicles in all speed limit categories - 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70mph.
Commenting on the results, Kathleen Braidwood at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) stated:
“The use of cameras is part of a comprehensive strategy to prevent road accidents across Scotland, and we welcome the publication of figures that show reductions in the number of people killed or seriously injured at camera sites."
In spite of this good news Ms Braidwood went on to add that it's disappointing that there has been a percentage increase in speeding vehicles in 40 - 50mph and 60mph fixed camera sites.
Motorists are urged to stick to road speed limits to not only reduce the number of accidents but to avoid potential claims on their car insurance.
