Males Opt For Speed Over Safety

July 19, 2012

A study by Opinion Matters on behalf of Carcraft has revealed that almost 50% of male respondents are more interested in image, speed or gadgets when purchasing a new car.

Perhaps more worryingly 52% of men do not think that safety features are the most important factor when looking for a car.

Figures for female drivers are remarkably different - with 60% of women basing their car buying decision on its safety features - which could help save money on female car insurance premiums in the long-run.

Whilst 60% of female drivers did say that they looked for a comfortable car, 20% of women also looked for a fashionable drive.

Commenting on the research, Business psychologist Michael Guttridge stated that research shows that men tend to be risk-takers and more aggressive than their female counterparts.

He added:

"They also express their aggression in direct ways and become more competitive when driving - hence their interest in fast cars. Evolutionary psychology suggests that these behaviours would have helped a male survive and find a mate more easily."
