British motorists may have to pay to use a 20 mile strip of the heavily congested A14 road in Cambridgeshire, following an announcement by the Government earlier this week.
The "A14 Corridor Scheme" has recently been added to the Department for Transport's (DfT) major projects programme. Work is due to start in 2018.
The DfT have said that part of the funding for the project could be supplied through imposed tolls over the new 20 mile section of the A14 road.
The department went on to add that more work would need to be carried out to help identify the best tolling solution for the road.
The move to improve the section of road has been welcomed by South Cambridgeshire MP, Andrew Lansley, who stated that the A14 needs to be rebuilt.
He added that the "A14 has stopped Cambridge from growing and it's an impediment day by day to people going about their business."
Other political figures in the area have also backed the move to improve the road and introduce a tolling system.
Road users in the area are advised to look for the best deal on their car insurance to help keep running costs down.
