Tyre company, Tyresafe has warned motorists to check that their tyres meet regulatory standards so they remain safe whilst on the road (and avoid expensive car insurance claims).
The company issued the advice after statistics by the Ministry of Justice showed that the total number of road users throughout England and Wales found to be driving with dangerous or defective tyres stood at well over 9.5K in 2011.
The true number of illegal tyres could be a lot higher, however, as the figures by the Ministry of Justice do not include issues dealt with by the police at the roadside.
Commenting on the findings of the report, Chairman of TyreSafe, Stuart Jackson said that tyres play an important role in road safety, adding:
"Not only is there still a high level of ignorance about tyre care, but perhaps even more alarming is that many motorists continue to drive on tyres that they know are illegal or dangerous."
Mr Jackson likened it to playing Russian Roulette since the tyre is the only part of the car in contact with the road. As a result it makes them vitally important to how the car drives.
