The House of Lords has agreed a proposal to ban smoking in private cars and has been sent to MPs for further consideration.
Whilst the "smoke-free private vehicles" bill has been approved by the Lords it will still need to be given the thumbs up by MPs in the House of Commons before it gets passed.
The aim of the bill is to make smoking in cars illegal - with a focus on vehicles that carry children. First-time offenders will be subjected to a smoke-free awareness course or a £60 fine.
Commenting on the bill, Lord Ribeiro told the House of Lords that, whilst people recognise the hazards of a smoke-filled pub many car insurance holders fail to recognise the dangers posed to their children whilst smoking in the car.
He added:
"But somehow driving a car with the window open is OK. Why? Because the smoke appears to be going out.
"But, in fact, this is not the case. The evidence for second-hand smoke entering the back of a car where children sit is high.
"Don't forget, these children are strapped in for their own safety and cannot move away from the smoke."
In spite of this British Prime Minister, David Cameron has expressed nervousness around passing the bill as he believes it could have serious implications for personal freedoms.
