The car history checking company, HPI, has issued a warning regarding 10 million+ cars on British roads with a hidden history.
Following a report by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) that suggested the number of cars on UK roads is up by 9%, HPI believes that almost 10.5 million cars could be at risk.
The company has stated that the used-car market is a minefield for those looking to buy, who may not be aware of any outstanding financial debts that stay with the vehicle when it's sold on.
MD of HPI, Daniel Burgess commented:
“Unscrupulous sellers use a variety of tricks to bump up the price of an older vehicle and hide a dodgy past.”
Figures indicate that over 6 million cars are estimated to have had licence plates changed and almost 1.5 million have a mileage discrepancy.
In addition to this the firm suggest that 1 in 4 cars have been written-off by car insurance firms - amounting to around 1.25 million cars on UK roads.
