The majority of used cars that are sold are not fit to be driven on roads, according to a recent report.
The research carried out by Experian AutoCheck of 1,000+ cars purchased in the last year shows that nine out of ten of them were faulty. The report also showed that over a third of the vehicles had either been involved in a crime, had to be written off or had loans that had not yet been paid-off associated with them.
The study showed that almost 90% of the cars did not comply with the law and those that are at least 5 years or older tend to have the most dubious past.
Of the cars checked the Renault Clio was considered to be the top car with a "shady" history at a whopping 93%. In fact a quarter of these were found to be discarded from car insurance companies.
However, the VW Golf and Ford Focus were also revealed to be the two car types that had the most uncleared debt associated with them.
Commenting on the findings, Peter Turner, MD of Experian Interactive, UK & Ireland said:
"While not all hidden histories disclosed are critical, many, such as the number of previous owners and modifications might impact on your final decision to purchase the car."
Mr Turner added that "for many people, buying a car is the second most significant purchase we are likely to make in our lives."
He went on to say that it's important to thoroughly research any used car before buying.
