IAM Calls For Motoring Law Change

June 15, 2012

The majority of drivers believe that making "causing serious injury by dangerous driving" an offence is a good idea, according to a new report.

A recent survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has revealed that 94% of car insurance policyholders support a "causing serious injury by dangerous driving" law.

While reckless driving that leads to injury is a chargeable offence the extent of the injuries are not actually taken into consideration. IAM (and the majority of drivers) believe that this needs to change.

Whilst 53% of respondents believe that drivers should be sentenced according to the actual offence, 44% believe that the offence's outcome should form the basis of the sentence passed.

Commenting on the survey, Simon Best of IAM said: "People want to see tougher penalties to deal with situations where the victim of a road accident is seriously injured. But the government needs to ensure that punishments for dangerous driving accurately reflect the severity of the offences committed."
