David Cameron has announced that British driving licences will be stamped with logos representing the United Kingdom from 2015, after 17 years of just the European Union emblem.
Mr Cameron believes that the EU flag on British driving licences was a source of irritation for many patriotic British car insurance holders who see it as a sort of interference from EU Headquarters, commenting:
"I think people do find the endless - as Douglas Hurd put it - European interference in the nooks and crannies of daily life infuriating. They know that our flag is the Union Jack and not the EU flag."
The final design for the new licences are yet to be decided, however, it's believed that it could include the Union Jack flag, Royal Crest or both. A spokesman for No 10 added:
"There's no reason why the British driving licence should have the EU flag but not the union flag. People in this country are proud of our national symbols. It's time that, once again, we allowed those national symbols on British driving licences."
The new licences are also to include embedded microchips to allow updates to be made easily, such as change of address, without the need for a new licence to be issued.
