Boris Johnson Backs London Grand Prix

June 29, 2012

London Mayor, Boris Johnson is backing plans by Formula One boss, Bernie Ecclestone to bring the Grand Prix to London.

Ecclestone has put forward proposals to create an F1 track that passes iconic London landmarks, including Buckingham Palace and Trafalgar Square.

Commenting on the proposal, Boris Johnson stated:

"I am always interested in projects that attract jobs and bring growth,

"The question of air quality and noise impact will have to be looked at. I am broadly positive providing we can satisfy the air quality and noise issues."

Whilst Johnson appears to be backing Ecclestone's ambitious plans, others are not so keen. The likes of business leaders, taxi drivers, car insurance holders and green party advocates are raising concerns over the plan. In addition to this, Westminster Council, who would be responsible for the track, has claimed that they had not been consulted prior to the announcement.

Commenting on behalf of the capital's business leaders, Jace Tyrrell of the New West End Company stated:

"Do we want events to promote the city around the world? Yes, we do. But we need to make sure it doesn't impact on traders."

Bernie Ecclestone's proposed plan would cost around £35 million to put in place and the 3.5 mile circuit is expected to start and end in The Mall.
