Labour Urges Action On EU Gender Ruling
March 7, 2012
Labour are calling for the British government to consult with the European Union (EU) over plans to end lower female car insurance premiums after ruling that they are discriminatory.
In spite of the fact that women are statistically less likely to have an accident*, they will be unable to obtain cheaper car insurance premiums from December 2012.
John Woodcock, the shadow transport minister for Labour, stated that the Government should look into lowering the cost of premiums across the board rather than increasing them for women.
Woodcock added that motorists are already being squeezed by record-high fuel prices and female drivers are likely to be dismayed that "out of touch ministers are not lifting a finger to defuse the situation."
In addition to this Labour are suggesting that telematics car insurance or "black box insurance" schemes could prove to be a very positive way to help lower premiums for motorists as well as help solve this issue.
* 20% fewer accidents on average.
