In-Car Smoking Damages its Value

March 23, 2012

Motorists who smoke are being warned of the dangers to their car as well as to damages to their health.

The British Car Auctions (BCA) are warning car insurance holders of the dangers of smoking whilst driving.

The company have said that any driver who has smoked in their car over an extended period of time could expect to see a drop in the value of their vehicle when they go to sell it.

This came about after research undertaken by the British Medical Association suggested that the levels of toxins in a car can be as much as 23 times higher than a smoke-filled bar.

Tim Naylor, a spokesperson for the BCA commented:

"If drivers aren't motivated by the health of their passengers, perhaps they will be by the diminishing health of their finances.  Lighting up inside a car seriously devalues the vehicle for resale."

Naylor added that research suggests that presentation is a top factor in influencing the price of a used car. A car that resembles an "ashtray on wheels" is unlikely to sell well.
