Car insurance firms are looking to increase the premiums of motorists who commit minor driving offences.
Insurers are looking to penalise people who have been caught speeding or used mobile devices whilst driving.
First-time speeders can expect to see their car insurance go up by as much as 22%.
Motorists caught texting or using a mobile device whilst driving could expect to see their premium increase by as much as 60%. Some insurers may refuse to quote at all.
A spokesperson for the car insurance industry commented:
"We want to get the message across that mobile phone usage is absolutely not acceptable. Even though it may be treated by the law in a similar way to a speeding fine, we insurers view it very seriously."
