Motorway Speed Increase Pilot To Go Ahead

March 23, 2012

The British Government is set to begin talks with motoring groups around the country over the next few weeks to discuss tests prior to the proposed 80mph speed limit change on motorways.

The motorway speed trial is expected to take place as early as 2013 with the transport secretary, Justine Greening to order pilot schemes on wider sections of motorways with overhead display gantries, such as the M25, allowing motor agencies to lower the speed limit in poor weather or heavy traffic.

In spite of this the road safety charity, Brake have stated that they believe this is gambling with people's lives. Commenting:

"The Government should instead look at how it can reduce costly and devastating crashes, and reduce congestion, through more variable speed limits and other measures, without negating the safety benefits by increasing the upper limit."

As a result Brake are urging the transport secretary to consult road safety groups on the matter before putting any plans in action.
