Volvo Airbags - A Fresh Look At Safety

March 23, 2012

Car manufacturer, Volvo has announced plans to introduce a new type of airbag to reduce injuries and fatalities.

Volvo spokesperson, Thomas Broberg has said that the company wants to eliminate injuries and fatalities to pedestrians, cyclists, car insurance holders and their passengers, stating:

“The challenge was designing an airbag that is exposed to the weather.

"It was necessary as part of our vision that by 2020 nobody should be killed or injured in a Volvo.”

The latest airbag from Volvo, in an unusual move, is fitted under the car's bonnet - rather than in front of the driver.

The bag will inflate over part of the windscreen when a sensor at the front of the car is activated. This means that anyone the car collides with will also be protected.

The idea behind this airbag is that the likes of pedestrians and cyclists will be given some level of protection. However, car insurance holders have been warned that they still need to take care and pay attention whilst on the road.

Broberg commented:

"We believe this can substantially reduce the number of serious injuries to pedestrians."
