Motor Charity Urges For British Clock Changes

March 26, 2012

Motorists could be safer on the roads if the government were to move the UK's clocks forward by an hour all year round, according to a road safety charity.

The road safety charity Brake urged the British government to make the switch prior to the annual time change last weekend, car insurance holders may be interested to hear..

Over 26,000 people have written to their MPs in support of Brake's "Lighter Later" campaign. However, it's been pointed out by critics of the campaign that if the change did go-ahead many children would have to walk to school in the dark.

The Deputy Chief Executive for Brake, Julie Townsend, commented:

“We waste too much precious daylight when most of us are asleep. Changing the clocks would mean it stays lighter later in the day, so we have more daylight when most people are awake. The effect would be safer roads in the afternoons and evenings, when many are walking and cycling home from school or work and need to be seen by drivers."

Ms Townsend added that by making this change it could also promote healthier lifestyles and stronger communities as it could encourage more people to get out - whether walking or cycling.
