Fuel Tank Drivers Vote For Strike Action

March 27, 2012

It's been announced that fuel tank drivers have overwhelmingly voted in favour of industrial action over a dispute regarding safety standards and terms and conditions, raising more concerns for car insurance holders.

The fuel tank drivers union, Unite, balloted over 2,000 members at a number of fuel distribution companies in the UK. Members of staff at five of these firms have backed a motion for industrial action consisting of strikes.

Speaking for the union - Unite, Diana Holland commented:

"These votes send a clear message throughout the industry and should prompt all the major companies to get around the table to establish minimum standards.

"This is not about pay - this is about ensuring that high safety and training standards are maintained, so that our communities are safe."

Unfortunately these fuel companies deliver to the likes of Shell, Esso, Sainsburys and Tesco - all significant players in the market. Consequently consumers are likely to suffer.

With fuel costs already high and car insurance prices rising this has raised further concerns for drivers, especially if we were to see fuel prices hiked any further as a result of this industrial action.

In spite of this the Government have stated that they are keen to reduce the impact felt by motorists and are putting contingency plans in place to deal with strike action.
