A recent survey by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has revealed that almost 60% of cyclists admit to jumping a red light.
IAM's study showed that 57% of cyclists admitted to jumping red lights, with 14% of them admitting to doing it on a regular basis. Of those questioned 40% gave the reason that it made it safer to move ahead of motorists while at the lights.
Amusingly enough over 50% of cyclits believed that they need to pay more attention to the Highway Code whilst waiting at junctions... bit of a contradiction really.
In spite of this IAM have said that they believe the results highlight the perils of being a cyclist in the UK. Commenting on behalf of IAM, CEO Simon Best said:
"Cyclists are right to feel that roads are not cycle friendly enough, and this is reflected in their behaviour.
"Changes to road layouts and junctions can improve safety for cyclists, but no junction will ever be safe for those who continue to jump red lights. It's dangerous and illegal."
Mr Best added that the police need to enforce law as strongly for cyclists as they do for car insurance holders as they are putting themselves and others at risk.
