New Government proposals may mean that UK drivers will soon be able to buy car tax discs without having to produce the necessary proof of car insurance.
Since computer checks to locate registered owners of uninsured cars are now in force the Government believes that producing a car insurance certificate to buy a tax disc is no longer necessary.
The proposal is part of the Government's continued crack-down on "red tape". Commenting on the proposed changes Stephen Hammond, roads minister said:
"There is absolutely no benefit in making motorists prove they have insurance when they buy a tax disc now that we regularly check existing databases for insurance."
Mr Hammond added that the proposals will make the whole process far quicker, easier and cheaper.
In spite of this the AA have expressed concerns that it may send the wrong message to motorists with regards to car insurance. Simon Douglas, a spokesperson for the group said:
"To knock out a simple and almost fool-proof check that insurance is in place, once every year or six months, is madness. It’s telling the public that it’s OK to delay or even avoid taking out cover."
He added that should it become law there is a chance that we will see a significant increase in the number of people driving without cover.
