Scottish Drink-Drive Limit To Be Cut

September 7, 2012

Scottish politicians are backing a move to cut the drink-drive limit in Scotland in a bid to save lives.

The Scots plan on cutting the legal drink-drive limit from 80 - 50mcg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. According to current figures this would bring Scotland in-line with other countries in Europe, including Spain, France and Germany.

It is believed that by putting a reduced drink-drive limit in place they could not only reduce accidents on Scottish roads but also reduce the number of car insurance claims.

Commenting on the motion, Kenny MacAskill, Scottish Justice Secretary told the press that the consultation will show that the majority of Scottish people want this, adding:

"I think we're expecting support around the chamber. Although it's being driven by the SNP Government, we know that other parties are with us on this. We've got these powers, we're acting to save lives. If we had more powers, I think we'd save more lives."

The move has proved popular with many experts in Scotland - including Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland QC, who said:

"As prosecutors, we know from bitter experience the misery and suffering that driving under the influence can cause. It all too often results in serious injury or loss of life, with around 10% of the deaths on Scottish roads involving drivers who are over the legal limit."
