Increasing numbers of drivers are putting themselves and others at risk by using their mobile phones whilst driving, a new study by a car finance company has, rather unsurprisingly, revealed.
The study shows that 23% of young drivers between the ages of 18 - 24 have admitted to making and receiving calls on their mobile phones whilst driving.
In addition to this a fifth of them have also admitted to checking emails and text messages whilst on the road. Official figures suggest that the number of people using phones for texting and emailing stands at around 12%, in-spite of the dangers of mobile use whilst driving.
The survey went on to reveal that at least 25% of drivers eat and drink while on the road and around a third fiddle with their satnavs whilst on the go.
A spokesperson for the company said:
"Many of us don't think anything of eating and smoking behind the wheel, but a momentary distraction can cause serious accidents. Driving distractions are a major contributor to fatal road accidents, many of which are caused by motorists having a sneaky cigarette or bite to eat whilst driving."
Young drivers are urged to reconsider mobile phone use whilst driving otherwise they could be at risk of an accident and a young drivers insurance claim.
