Transport Secretary Cautious Over Motorway Speed Proposals

September 21, 2012

The potential risk to drivers must be weighed against the plans to increase the motorway speed limits on British roads, says the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

The proposal to increase the motorway speed limit was originally put forward by the former transport secretary - Philip Hammond. He suggested that many drivers openly flout the current 70mph speed limit anyway.

Following Mr McLoughlin's re-assignment to the position he has stressed the link between high-speed driving and serious accidents. In addition to this it could have a knock-on effect on the cost of car insurance due to a possible increase in accidents as a result.

Commenting on the situation Mr McLoughlin told Sky News that road safety would be his primary concern but will wait until the end of the consultation to look at all the evidence.

He added:

"What we have to have in our mind is that speed does kill and most of the very serious accidents that take place on our roads involve people disobeying the speed limits."
